The Coulonges Wind Farm at a Glance
The Coulonges Wind Farm is located in the municipalities of Coulonges-Thouarsais, La Chapelle-Gaudin, and Noirterre. It consists of 18 wind turbines, each with a rated capacity of 2 MW.
Boralex and its teams have forged strong ties with the municipalities where the wind farm is located. This is particularly true of Coulonges-Thouarsais, which has incorporated a wind turbine into its logo.
Innovations to Support Biodiversity
At the wind farm, two speed-limiting solutions were tested: Dynamique Smart by Wildlife Acoustic and Probat by Sens of Life. The goal of these solutions is to provide better protection for bats by throttling the wind turbines during activities not covered by standard throttling protocols or that are unpredictable (such as climate change). This is done while maintaining significant renewable energy production and only when bats are present.
Boralex conducts numerous environmental monitoring activities at the wind farm, with a high frequency of site visits. Bat mitigation measures are effective and significantly reduce bat mortality. The layout of the wind turbines—arranged in five parallel rows oriented northeast/southwest—was chosen to highlight the network of hedgerows that characterize the bocage landscape, in perfect harmony with the landscape of the Gâtine foothills.
