A Transformative Partnership with Niagara College

Since 2021, Boralex has partnered with Niagara College’s Women in Trades program to offer hands-on internships for women pursuing careers in skilled trades. Under the guidance of Jason Weir and another teacher from the program, they select the top candidates are selected to join our Niagara wind site in Ontario.

The program exposes interns to a variety of technical trades — electricity, mechanics, carpentry, and more. From day one, they’re involved in electrical work and mentored by an experienced team. They quickly gain both confidence and autonomy.

The Women in Trades Internship Program at Boralex changed my life. It gave me the hands-on skills, confidence, and support to thrive in a rewarding career in renewable energy. For any woman looking to start fresh in a high-impact, traditionally male-dominated industry, this opportunity is truly empowering.

Field Mentorship to Empower Women in Trades

To ensure a successful integration, Boralex prioritizes hands-on technical mentorship. At the Niagara site, Meredith Halfpenny, a seasoned wind technician, has guided several interns through their experience.

The Women in Trades internship program has given me a fresh perspective on my work at Niagara. Mentoring new interns challenges me to clearly explain the 'why,' the 'how,' and our safety protocols for every task. Taking on this mentorship role not only sharpens my own technical skills, but reinforces the importance of creating a safe, inclusive work environment in the skilled trades.

The Power to Break Barriers:
Building a More Inclusive Industry

This program goes far beyond training. It’s about breaking down barriers in a traditionally male-dominated industry and giving women real opportunities to envision a future in renewable energy.

To truly change industry standards, we need to create concrete opportunities. This program gives women the space to step up, redefine the rules, and inspire the next generation.

A Model to Expand to New Regions

Encouraged by its positive impact, Boralex is now exploring ways to expand the internship program to more sites and regions. The goal: multiply opportunities for women in trades, build a strong network of female talent, and continue transforming the industry from the inside out.
