The project in details
The repowering project for the Saint-Cirgues-en-Montagne wind farm was initiated in 2022, with the objective of optimizing a site already dedicated to renewable energy production, consisting of 9 wind turbines.
Environmental surveys were carried out throughout 2023 to cover a complete biological cycle (fauna, flora, natural habitats, birdlife, and bats).
At the end of 2024, the municipality of Saint-Cirgues-en-Montagne formally approved the classification of the project area as a Renewable Energy Acceleration Zone (ZAENR), confirming its alignment with the region’s energy transition strategy.
This project aims to replace the existing turbines with 6 wind turbines—fewer but more efficient machines—thus increasing renewable electricity production while controlling environmental impacts.
Sources de la Loire Repowering Project stakeholders
The project involves several stakeholders, including:
- The municipality of Saint-Cirgues-en-Montagne, which is kept informed of the major stages of the project
- Landowners and farmers affected by the installation of wind turbines
- Government agencies
- Local residents
- Specialized consulting firms (environment, acoustics, landscape, hazard studies, hydrogeological studies
- The project developer Boralex, responsible for the project from start to finish: from design to operation of the wind farm
Consulting firms are involved at each key stage: conducting naturalist inventories, environmental impact studies, landscape studies, acoustic studies, technical design, and regulatory monitoring.
