A Pilot Project : Beehives at Boralex!

This Earth Day, April 22nd, let's celebrate biodiversity with a buzz-worthy pollinator adventure! As part of our commitment to supporting local ecosystems and biodiversity, beehives will soon be making their home on our sites.

A Global Vision for Biodiversity

Our office in Kingsey Falls (Québec, Canada) welcomed its first beehive and native bee hotel (beehome) on April 11th, as part of a pilot project.

Meanwhile in France (Haute-Loire), beehives will soon be installed at La Clé des Champs solar park, in the unused areas around the panels.

This project reflects our commitment to sustainable development. It helps measure and promote biodiversity around our facilities, strengthen our ties with local communities and stakeholders, and raise awareness among our teams about the importance of pollinators in ecosystems.

It is also a powerful way to create a symbolic and tangible connection between nature and renewable energy!

Good to know!

It is important to note that two types of habitats will be available for the two types of bees found on our sites: a honeybee hive and a beehome for native bees.

The beehive houses domestic bees, which are primarily raised for honey production. They live in highly organized colonies with a queen, workers, and drones. This type of bee is manageable, making their observation easier!

The native bee hotel, on the other hand, offers a shelter to solitary species, such as native bees that do not produce honey but are excellent pollinators. The bee hotel is a simple, maintenance-free, and effective way to support local biodiversity.

Installing both a honeybee hive AND a native bee hotel on the same site helps support biodiversity in a complementary way!

The project is already encouraging team involvement at Boralex!

In France, employees built the beehive supports themselves, using leftover materials from the solar park's construction - beams, crossbars, bolts. Talk about resourcefullness!
