Bats have historically had a bad reputation in popular culture, even being associated with vampires. It's high time to demystify this collective fear of these little nocturnal creatures that are greatly essential to our ecosystems! Boralex has found a solution to play a role in the conservation of bat habitats while continuing its daily activities.
Did you know?
Bats are an essential part of the ecosystem and can even be useful allies for humans! However, it is important to keep a certain distance from bats. Although they are not aggressive, they can carry rabies.

Thinking ahead!
On of our technicians in charge of the hydroelectric installation in Sissonville, New York, considered the following question : in addition to the duck houses required by our permits, why not also add a shelter for bats?
A bat shelter, or bat house, provides a safe space for them to grow and reproduce, as more and more habitats are being destroyed every day.
What is the connection between bats and our activities at Boralex?
Although our activities are essential for the ecological transition, they are not without risk for the flying species that live in the areas where we operate. This is why, in accordance with regulations, we implement various measures, such as curtailment (reducing the capacity of our engines), to protect biodiversity.
Innovative technology from our European colleagues!
In our European territories, we use Bioseco technology, a system that provides a 360-degree view through cameras installed on wind turbines to monitor birds in real time.
Features :
- If a species gets too close, lights and sounds are activated to scare it away
- If the species continue to approach, the wind turbine blades automatically stop to avoid a collision
The system restarts once the species has passed. And the AI algorithm helps avoid false alerts by distinguishing birds from other objects. Fascinating isn't it?
The benefits of such an initiative
Insect control : Bats have a big appetite and can eat up to 70% of their body weight in insects per night, which amounts to up to 1,200 insects per hour.
Pollination : Bats are exceptional nocturnal pollinators. As they fly through vegetation searching for insects, they carry pollen with them.
Fertilization : Bat guano, or droppings, is a very effective fertilizer because it offers ideal nutrient ratios for plant growth and healthy soil. Guano must be handled with care due to the pathogens it contains.
Our installations are operated with the utmost respect for living organisms, including bats!
One step at a time, Boralex demonstrates respect for the environment where it operates to have a positive impact while providing renewable and affordable energy for everyone!
