Combined
generation of electricity and steam from natural gas
BORALEX
AND GAZ MÉTROPOLITAIN ARE CONSIDERING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A 214 MW COGENERATION
PLANT IN THE TÉMISCAMINQUE REGION
Témiscaming,
June 18, 2002 Boralex and Gaz Métropolitain announced today that
they are
considering the generation of 214 MW of electricity in a cogeneration
plant to be built in the
Tembec industrial complex located at Témiscaming,
Québec. This announcement stems from
the tender call recently addressed
by Hydro-Québec to private electricity producers to meet the
government
corporations future needs.
To meet the demand beyond its forecasted 2006-2007
production capacity, Hydro-Québec
chose to ask private producers to
submit proposals for a total production of 1,200 MW. Against
this background,
Boralex and Gaz Métropolitain concluded an exclusive agreement with
Tembec
for the construction of facilities for the cogeneration of electricity and steam
from
natural gas in Tembecs Témiscaming industrial complex. Boralex
and Gaz Métropolitain
recently submitted their tender to Hydro-Québec.
Frank
A. Dottori, Tembec President and CEO, said that if this project is accepted
by Hydro-
Québec, Tembec would derive direct benefits from the cogeneration
facilities as they would
enable our Témiscaming Site to improve its
energy efficiency and reduce production costs of
the steam required for its
manufacturing processes. We have been studying the combined
generation of electricity
and steam from natural gas for a long time and we are convinced that
the Boralex
and Gaz Métropolitain tender represents a sustainable development project
from economic, environmental and social points of view.
Tembec firmly
believes that the Hydro-Québec approval of this electricity and steam
cogeneration
project would contribute to the maintenance of the 1,100 jobs at its Témiscaming
industrial
complex and provide the energy resources required for an eventual expansion, if
not
to the region itself. It should also be noted that the proposed project
would create permanent
jobs in the power plant in addition to temporary jobs
during the new facilities construction
phase.
